Today, I'll record the last episode of season 1. I'm planning on sharing what I've learnt from the 9 guest speakers about the future of learning, how we can make it joyful, their entrepreneurial journeys and how they brought their courses and workshops online due to COVID-19.
I always structured the conversations into three parts:
- The person and their background
- Their company or organisation
- How they dealt with COVID-19 and how they brought their courses and workshops online
Bonus: I've asked them to share an exercise that they do in their workshops or courses.
1) Where do they come from? What drives them? How did they decide to become an entrepreneur?
I saw that they have very different journeys behind them.
As kids they wanted be astronauts, secretary, sports reporter, musical stars, horse trainer when they grew up. What they have in common? Their paths and interests changed and as a result they found different roles. I'm very glad they did, otherwise we'd have to miss out on the amazing startups, businesses, schools, communities and organisations that they've built and what they've learnt along their paths.
What's clear there is not one path to becoming an entrepreneur. They have wildly different paths and motivations.
- love project work
- have a doer mentality
- love ground work, desire to make something out of nothing
- to work with people directly and have small impact
- want to shape something,
- side effect: are surrounded by entrepreneurs -> don't complain
- have skills like being able to convince friends
- love a challenge and see entrepreneurship as a personal growth opportunity for themselves
2) In the middle, I talked with my guests about the future of learning and how they build and lead their organisation.
About the future of learning
- The talk with Bilge about how to make learning impactful, memorable and applicable. Human interaction is needed to make it memorable. How can we activate passive learning to make it impactful? If we want to learn something we have to plan it
- Talk with Christian: How the chemistry between pupil and student is key for the learning process and outcome
- Talk with Janine: cultivating relationships to topics that you don't know via community learning events where you can get a sneak peak
- Talk with STRIDE: Collaboration helps you to learn about yourself. The best way to learn about oneself is when you encounter another
- STRIDE: Dream of Education that is personally meaningful, professionally relevant and societally impactful. They provide space to explore the important questions: what is a worthy investment of my time? What am I good at?
- STRIDE's point about whether we still need universities and what they can/can't teach us. They teach us to move within an existing system. Their mandate is to teach people to perform in the current economic system and find a job.
If we want to learn about how to make systemic change happen, universities can't teach us that.
- STRIDE: Future of learning: stronger individualisation while still have a social context. How can the collective support the individual learning?
About building and leading a business
- Seraina & Isa about scaling up: Does it have to be scalable? What if it can be meaningful, fun and sustain your living without becoming this big thing?
- Nicole about being unsatisfied, reinventing herself, not making business plans, trusting her intuition
- Bilge about having lots of ideas, putting them in the closet, let them come back, being a mom, founding with her best friend
- Seraina about purpose, when she knew she had to leave her job and money is not what's driving her
- Isabelle about startup growth, investors and a good business idea (-> questions she gets asked)
- Annina about wasting time to find an expert
3) How they brought their courses, workshops or offering online during COVID-19
- Online tutoring implemented within a week instead of a year
- Reduced 8h workshop to 1.5h online session
- Made digital speed-dating
- From two virtual offers and to 50 in a matter of days
- Learnings: It's a mistake to reproduce offline in online. Online has advantages and disadvantages. Building trust and then making transformational processes happen. Advantages: reach more people, have more info via chat then at a live event, sharing can be faster, less distractions -> give people the stage
