One of the hardest things as a developer is getting into a flow state that allows you to focus on difficult problems and create robust solutions without any distractions. This is especially hard as a digital nomad.
I've noticed a couple of factors that are required in order to get into a flow where you are prepared for deep work. These include:
- A quiet space free from distraction: This is especially hard when your "office" for the day may be a coffee shop, a Wholefoods, a park bench, on the side of the road in a car, or at a campsite ?.
- A cool environment: This one is huge for me. When temperature begins to rise I slowly start to get agitated. I lose focus easier and it's far easier for me to get frustrated. This is a hard one if you're working from Thailand or Bali, because many co-working spaces and a lot of cafes are wide open to the elements.
- Good music: I love to listen to a wide variety of music when I'm working, but my favourite genres for flow are chillhop & chillout, deep house (anjunadeep / above & beyond), liquid dnb and mellow alternative/indie.
These three things get me the majority of the way. I'd love to hear from you: What are your must-have requirements for getting into flow?
