It's almost impossible to change over night. I'm sure we've all tried. I have.
What I've found works is what everyone has been preaching forever - small, incremental changes. Maybe we should call them Atomic.
Is that enough though? It's not for me. I need a bit of a hybrid of changes in my life. Gahh, I'm so - what's the words... human.
Sometimes I need a bit of a shock. Instead of starting slowly and incrementally, I need to jump write in and do it. Full on. Hard core. Exercise is a perfect example; following the 2 day rule has been good to me, but would I have been better with a strict week of "too much"? Sometimes I think so. Other times, I know that doesn't work - it's not sustainable and things eventually go back to normal.
For me, I need to stick to the 2 day rule. Even if I don't feel like it. My problem is that when I fall off the wagon, I find it hard to get back on. I don't know why.
I've fallen off recently due to illness, followed by my birthday - good reasons!

Why is that not happening to me? Maybe it is. I always go back.
